Migis Lodge

Migis Lodge is a family run American plan resort on the shores of Sebago Lake in Maine. We arrived on a Monday just in time for lunch on the porch overlooking the lake. The sun was shining and it was a perfect 78 degrees. We didn’t know how many sunny days we were going to get in the last week of September so after lunch we changed into our bathing suits and headed for the water. It was brisk! By all accounts the water never gets really warm anywhere in Maine, but we were determined to eek out every last bit of warm weather fun and we didn’t regret it. One of our favorite ammenities at the resort were the complimentary use of all non- motorized boats at the resort. Migis has lots of little sandy coves and quaint wooden docks peppered along its shoreline and at each one you’ll find all manner of sea craft including kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, rowboats and sunfish. All just waiting there for the moment you may feel so inclined. Another nice touch are the quaint huts at each beach stocked each day with fluffy towels. We never saw anyone stocking these huts…each morning they would just be refilled like magic. So after lunch we swam and then took a canoe out to explore the various islands that dot the lake. The lake has a pretty strong current and some decent waves so it was an exhilarating paddle out and back. We were rewarded with two lovely lounge chairs and a nice long nap in the sun upon our return.

Day two we awoke to more beautiful weather. After a hearty breakfast we boarded Tykona II for a tour of Lake Sebago. Upon return we put on our tennis whites and enjoyed the beautiful lakeside courts. After lunch we went swimming and kayaking until we collapsed on one of the floating docks and fell asleep in the sun like turtles. It was heavenly. Dinner at Migis Lodge is a special affair every night. Gentleman wear jackets and ladies throw on something flowy or shimmery. Even the waitstaff don white shirts and bow ties to serve the impressive four course dinner each night. Sean and I loved the casual lake life by day/ dress up for dinner vibe at Migis- it was so much fun!

Day three was cloudy and rainy and little cooler. It was fun to wake up to a chilly morning and get a little bundled for our walk to breakfast. We made a toasty fire in the stone fireplace and settled in with our books while the rain gently fell on our roof. It was a great day to relax and snuggle. After lunch the rain cleared and we tried our hand at disc golf. If you haven’t played before it is like golf but you use a disc or a frisbee. This course was in the woods so trees served as obstacles. It was so much fun that we returned the next day to play again to try to beat our previous scores. Did I mention that we are competitive? Our afternoon was spent warming up in the log cabin sauna. It was rustic and adorable and also very relaxing. We showered and dressed for dinner and felt ourselves falling into a natural rhythm. We would stroll the long way to dinner- along the windy path by the lakeshore, past sauna beach and the rocky outcroppings, past tall grass and pines, winding around the boat docks and sandy shores. As the sun sank lower in the sky everything started to glow with pink and gold. All the lines would soften and all the colors would deepen until we reached the main dock. White lights twinkled from the main lodge above calling us to dinner. It was heavenly.

Day four the sunny weather returned! We took a long walk exploring the surrounding wooded trails and played another stellar tennis match in the morning but the absolute highlight was the barbecue lunch served at cookout point! The adorable cabins and impeccable New England design details were already giving us major Parent Trap camp vibes but the cookout with green gingham tablecloths on the picnic tables and the incredible food served on metal camp lunch trays was the absolute cherry on top. So cute. That afternoon we took our books to the main terrace and sat in the adirondack chairs overlooking the lake. We enjoyed tea and pastries and may have even nodded off here and there in the spruce scented afternoon air. We savored every last bite of our final dinner. Being vegetarians we are never very hopeful when we travel. We seek out vegetarian goodness but are always prepared for vegetarian mediocrity. Migis Lodge went above and beyond to meet our every need and we were delighted. Our favorites included the delicious salads and homemade soup that were different at every lunch and dinner service. Fresh local, seasonal products were used to create beautiful and delicious meals.

Day five we woke up eager to get to a big breakfast. We downed our last hot chocolates and got on the road for home. But before we left we put in our request to return next year. We are already counting the days until our return.
